Travis Axon

November 17, 2007 / by jenbev

When Travis Axon came and visited my Multicultural English class, he intrigued me into considering joining the Peace Corps when I graduate. Travis Axon was a representative for the United States Peace Corps. He came to our class and helped those of us who didn’t know a lot about the Peace Corps learn what exactly it was all about. He told personal stories about when he served over in Africa.

Travis told us all about the historical aspect of the Peace Corps. It was founded in 1961 by John F Kennedy, and more than 190,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. As a volunteer you 27 months of training, you get your ticket paid for, a living allowance, and 24 vacation days, as well as $6000 dollars when you get back from volunteering. When I left class I went to the website and found that everything Travis talked about was right there on the website. I visited www.peacecorps.com. The website was colorful but not too busy. All the information was presented in a professional manor.

After visiting the Peace Corps website I visited the Oxfam International website, www.oxfam.com. Oxfam International is a confederation of 13 organizations working together with over 3,000 partners in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. It was very similar to the Peace Corps however they both have different areas of concentration. Both websites were informing and easy to understand. Both websites are non-government organizations.

I have looked into many volunteering organizations and I’m interested in a few to pursue when I graduate. I believe each program is helping our world out in one way or another. I’m glad I got the opportunity to check out these websites and the opportunity to learn about them. Travis came and did exactly what his purpose was, I am now highly informed about different organizations.
