Disorderly Events Ordinace

December 4, 2007 / by jenbev

“Disorderly Events” is a term that has been progressively getting more popular in the city of Chico everyday. After engaging in conversation with a few volunteers at their booth on campus and visiting the website promoting Chico’s residents to get involved, I have grown an interest in the debate. The debate is over a new city ordinance that was passed by the city of Chico. On November 6th the Chico City Council ratified the disorderly events council.
The website was very interesting. I am so disappointed in myself for being so unaware of the situation. The website did give a lot of information, however it was very biased. The website consisted of a home page, a calendar of events, link to local news, link to websites concerning the topic, our civil rights, the constitution, and a Q&A link. After looking at each link, which was www.civilrights.org, I have better knowledge on the topic.
I have concluded that the definition of “disorderly events” is too broad and can range from a funeral to a peace march. It seems like there would be a lot of fights on what is considered disorderly events. Also By the police being able to only need to have circumstantial evidence, which would be sufficient for the police to act, that it would take a big bite out of our 1st amendment. I am not interested in signing the petition, I am very interested on this topic now, and if you’re from Chico you should be too!
The following is a picture of residents at the City Council Meeting.
